Exhibition at the Scottish Parliament

John Bellany and the Scottish Women’s Hospitals

20 January to 16 April 2016 (closed 15-20 February and Sundays)

During the First World War, the Scottish Women’s Hospitals were set up in war zones across Europe to tend sick and wounded servicemen in countries including Serbia, France, Bulgaria and Russia.

The hospitals were staffed almost entirely by female doctors, surgeons, nurses and support staff and were funded by communities from across the UK and beyond.

Renowned Scottish artist John Bellany (1942-2013) produced a series of oil paintings and drawings inspired by the experiences of the wounded soldiers and the nurses that cared for them.  These previously unseen works will feature in the exhibition which will also include a specially commissioned poem by Scotland’s Makar, Liz Lochhead, her creative response to the Bellany works.

Archive photographs, film and objects on loan from public and private collections tell the wider story of the Scottish Women’s Hospitals.

Winter Presentations 2016

Our commitment to ensure people of all ages have the opportunity to learn more about the work of the Scottish Women’s Hospitals during WW1, keeps rolling on.  We have produced a DVD which tells the story of the SWH during the war years. The DVD follows the story from its beginning in Edinburgh to the hospitals in France and Serbia and includes footage of where the hospitals were, interviews with local historians, and our visits to  the monuments and graves that are dedicated to these brave women. The film also follows my journey, explaining where the research takes place and the people who have helped me along the way. It follows not only the work the hospitals did overseas but individual accounts of the lives of people such as Elsie Ingis. This largely forgotten piece of history is being brought  back to life.  Events for the early part of 2016 are underway. Talks/Presentations are scheduled for Hamilton, Airdrie, Coatbridge, Motherwell, Blantyre, Falkirk, Carluke and Glasgow. With a few to be confirmed.    For more details on the presentation and how we can arrange an evening to come along to your venue. Please call Alan on 07961330195.
